Tips for Back Health

Good posture provides many health benefits. It can help you look thinner and taller, and can also help your muscles and joints to work properly.

Modern life has many of us sitting in cars or at desks for long periods of time. We often try to carry too much weight in backpacks, purses or briefcases, usually carrying this weight on just one side of the body. This can cause an imbalance in your natural posture.

Here are some ideas for improving your back health:

  • If you work at a desk, be sure your desk, chair and computer terminal are positioned to minimize strain to your back, neck and legs.
  • Do you carry too much weight on your back? If you find yourself leaning forward or rounding your shoulders to carry a backpack or briefcase, it may be too heavy or poorly positioned. Lighten the load or invest in a backpack or briefcase that will distribute the weight more evenly.
  • Check your mattress to be sure that is supports your spine while you are sleeping.
  • Set a timer to remind yourself throughout the day to practice standing or sitting straighter.
